Psychological Factors

Psychological factors in IBS

Psychological factors play a significant role in the course of IBS, affecting the persistence and severity of symptoms. We know that rates of depression and anxiety are significantly higher in IBS patients compared to people that do not have IBS. Similarly, people with IBS are more likely to have clinically diagnosable mental disorder (e.g., anxiety or depressive disorders) compared to the general population.People diagnosed with IBS may also have to contend with:

  • Self-esteem issues/loss of confidence
  • Body image issues associated with symptoms, such as abdominal distension, looking or feeling ‘pregnant’.
  • Sexual problems (e.g., loss of libido)
